The current riots,although they involve Muslims, seem to me to have much more in common with the riots and slogans of the black consciousness movement of the seventies. (…) The images of the rioters on the streets of Clichy show them sporting T-shirts labelled mort pour rien. [Died in vain] Now what could be more un-Islamic than that? No claiming of martyrdom or dozens of virgins here. There are not the flags, the typical chanting and sloganizing of Islamism on the marches.

Doze dias depois, eu continuo não comprando a versão da Eurábia, de que os tumultos em Paris e arredores são uma revolta muçulmana contra o Ocidente. Assim como Ms. Adloyada, tudo me parece indicar muito mais semelhanças com os tumultos de Los Angeles em 1965.

O que, obviamente, não quer dizer que não existam lideranças religiosas querendo utilizar estes tumultos para sua causa. Mas até agora não há nada que indique que são muitos, ou que são relevantes. E, o que é mais importante, não há nada para indicar que são eles os responsáveis por ter iniciado a revolta e inflamado uma população de imigrantes pobres e desgostosos com o país que supostamente lhes acolheu. Ou, como diz Belle Waring:

I’m reluctant to embrace the Victor Steyn Hinderaker death-throes of Eurabia thing, since it looks more like your run-of-the-mill broke people rioting, combined with massive state incompetence. The cheerful schadenfreude on this issue from the right is unseemly. “Remember when they mocked our social system because something terrible happened to us? Now something terrible is happening to France! I bet they wish they could go cry on the shoulder of their old friend—Saddam Hussein!”

Não, não me convenço de que o islamismo de parte dos revoltosos seja parte importante para que tenham pegado em armas. E acho que a insistência de boa parte da blogosfera à direita em pintar este quadro só serve para piorar o preconceito contra um povo que não precisa ser ainda mais destratado.

UPDATE: Patrick Belton, do OxBlog, está blogando diretamente de Paris. Como diria Mr. Instapundit, de onde tirei o link, “leiam a coisa toda”. Minha passagem predileta:

One is tempted to see in 2005 the riots of the atavistic, but that would be overdrawing the issue - they are the riots of Newark, Watts, and Brixton come to Paris.
